COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY! Thank you to all of our families for supporting our first Student Initiated and Run Community Service Day! Several organizations benefited from East School’s generosity and elbow grease. The New Canaan Food Bank is very appreciative of our Souper Canned Food Drive. Norwalk Hospital is thrilled with all the books and letters. A local Norwalk aid group was overwhelmed by the Birthday Bags, and Blackum School in Bridgeport is delighted with the school supplies. In addition, our students sent truly beautiful valentine wishes to service men and women in veteran’s hospitals. Our 4th graders are very pleased with their accomplishments.

Nominations are due by tomorrow (Friday) February 10.  Please turn in your paper ballot to your child’s teacher/the Main Office or go to the East PTC Website (www.eastschoolptc.org) and click on the nominating link at the top of the page.  You can fill out your ballot right online and you’re done!

The East School Nominating Committee has begun its search to fill the PTC Executive Board, Standing Committee Chairs and all Committee Coordinators for the 2012-2013 school year.  Consider nominating yourself or others and make a difference in our school!

Attached you will find a summary of each volunteer position.  After reading the job descriptions, please fill out the ballot form with your name or the name of someone you would like to nominate next to a position.  If you are interested in more than one position, please rank your interests accordingly.  If there is information about your background that would be helpful to the nominating committee, please provide the details in the indicated area.

Your feedback will ensure that those who want to take an active role with the PTC will not be overlooked and that the best candidates are presented.

Please note the entire ballot does not have to be filled out: one or two suggestions are most welcome. Remember, there are two ways to be nominated for a position: self-nominate or nominate a person or persons with interests or abilities qualifying them for a position.

Nominations

  • Nominations

    Enter name(s) below each position, separating by comma(s) if necessary.
  • Preside over PTC meetings, ex-officio member of all standing committees and signatory on all checking accounts. Attends monthly President’s Council meetings with the Superintendent, Principal, and Executive Board. Attendance at all school functions is necessary between the two presidents. (5-6 hours/week)
  • Assume responsibilities of president in his or her absence. The main responsibility is to coordinate volunteers. Organize and coordinate the Volunteer Coffee in early September; assist with coordinating volunteers for Fall Fair; responsible for scheduling Welcome Desk volunteers. (Time commitment is heavily weighted in the fall)
  • Oversee fundraising activities, helping standing committee chairs coordinate their events. Update PTC on fundraising status at monthly meetings. (2-3 hours/week)
  • Responsible for updating and maintaining our Website. Record minutes of PTC and Executive Board meetings. Handle all PTC correspondence (including gifts and flowers) and maintain official list of voting members. Word processing experience is necessary. May include helping to compile East School Directory. (3-4 hours/week)
  • Two-year term. First Year (Assistant) Treasurer handles all deposits for the PTC. Second Year Treasurer maintains PTC financial records, pays PTC bills, presents financial reports at PTC meetings, coordinates cash needs, and coordinates tax return filing with outside accountant. Both treasurers create annual budget and attend all fundraising events to handle money. Some accounting experience and familiarity with Quickbooks are very helpful. (Assistant Treasurer - 1 hour/week; Treasurer – 1-2 hours/week; more during budget season (Mar-Apr).)

  • Fundraising Chairs:

    The following positions coordinate with and report to the VP of Ways and means
  • Plan, organize and run East School Bingo Night (usually held in Feb) in conjunction with the 4th Grade Pasta Night. Volunteers are obtained at the September coffee from grades K-3 only. (Bulk of planning and organizing happens in January and early February.)
  • Plan, organize and run East School Book Fair in April. (Some planning activities in the fall.)
  • Coordinate Conference Fun days in December, including registration, payments, class descriptions, instructors, etc. (Bulk of work is setup and it is not necessary to be present during the days.)
  • Plan and run the Fall Fair. Oversee the sub-committee chairs. Extremely helpful if at least one chair takes on a 2-year commitment (Heavy commitment from late-summer through the end of October.)

  • Fall Fair Sub-Committees:

  • Oversee the Family Photo Days. Chair will negotiate fees with the photographer(s) and coordinate payment of fees from families. (4-5 hours in the Spring (negotiations) and September(scheduling))
  • Fourth grade parents responsible for planning, organizing, and running Pasta Night (to be held in conjunction with Bingo Night, usually in February). Obtain volunteers at Welcome Back Coffee and via room parent communication. (2-3 hours/week the month or so before the event)
  • Oversee ordering and distribution process of gift-wrap orders. (2-3 hours/week in early-mid September and early November)
  • Plan, organize, and run Parent Social sometime in spring. Oversee subcommittees for Art and Silent Auction. (Heaviest time commitment 1-2 months prior to event and week of event)
  • Work closely with visual art teachers to plan and organize creation of student art to be auctioned at Parent Social. Coordinate framing of art with local framer, if necessary. (Bulk of work 3-4 weeks prior to event)
  • Plan, organize and run Silent Auction at Parent Social. (Bulk of work 5-6 weeks prior to event)
  • Oversee orders and current inventory of East School clothing and accessories. Sell merchandise at all school-wide events: Meet and Greet, Welcome Back Coffee, Open Houses, Fall Fair, Book Fairs, and Kindergarten Intake. (2-3 hours/month maintaining inventory + 1-2 hours/event; more heavily weighted in the fall)

  • Committee Chairs and Coordinators:

    These positions report to the First Vice President. All positions are yearlong unless associated with a one-time event.
  • In the fall, distribute information to all families on the PTC’s new fundraiser, Display My Art, manage deadline and terms with vendor, and help with distribution of product. Work with Visual Arts teachers to coordinate Arts Evening in May, including coordinating parent volunteers to hang art and organizing refreshments and programs for the evening. Act as a liaison with Art teachers to hang art throughout the year as needed. (3-4 hours in the fall; 5-6 hours in May)
  • Work with Principal and school secretary to coordinate the “Meet and Greet” of students with their newly assigned teachers the last week of summer vacation. Coordinate “Kindergarten Popsicles” on playground following Meet and Greet. Coordinate volunteers to greet students in the lobby on the first day of school. Required to be here the last week of summer vacation. (1-2 hours/early August coordinating website/email notification + 2-3 hours/Meet and Greet + 1 hour on first day of school)
  • Coordinate selling of tickets for Bridgeport Bluefish baseball game (in May or June) to East School families. (3-4 hours)
  • Attend Board of Education Meetings twice a month (usually 1st and 3rd Monday evenings) and report Board activities pertinent to East School at PTC meetings. Post notes on the PTC Website. Position can be shared. (2-3 hours/month)
  • Coordinate volunteers and organize Community Service Day (the day before Thanksgiving). (1-2 hours/week in November + 3 hours the day of event)
  • Two year term for two people. Communicate with teachers, students and community agencies to develop and implement school-related community projects such as Boxtops for Education, coat drive, Diabetes Walk. (2-3 hours/month)
  • Assist Secretary with Web maintenance and home/school communications. (1-2 hours/week)
  • Coordinate with grade-level lead teacher to bring people with particular experience and skills from outside the school into the classroom to enrich a given area of study. Chair may volunteer for the grade(s) for his/her children. (1-2 hours/month)
  • Help organize activities and recruit volunteers for Field Day in June. Work with the Physical Education teachers. (2-3 hours/week 2-3 weeks in late May/early June)
  • Fourth grade parents responsible for organizing various activities for the “graduating class” including an end-of-year party and fundraising activities such as conference babysitting and another activity such as a carwash. (2-3 hours/month in Oct., Dec., and May)
  • Responsible for maintaining plantings in island and tubs in front of the school entrance. (1-2 hours/month)
  • Oversee and help to organize with room parents a teacher wish list “Giving Tree” in the school lobby during the month of December. (1-2 hours/week for 2-3 weeks in Nov. and first week of Dec.)
  • Coordinate refreshments for monthly PTC meetings (5/year), Welcome Back coffee, two Open Houses, and a casual Welcome Back Lunch for the faculty the first day of school. (3-4 hours in September; 1 hour other months)
  • Maintain bulletin boards at school entryways with current events including articles and photos. Update the Web photo album. Submit articles and/or photos to the New Canaan newspapers for publication when necessary. (1-2 hours/month)
  • Coordinate volunteers to work in the Library/Media Center, including running training meeting(s) for new and returning volunteers. Assist Library Media specialist in setting up for author visits. (4-5 hours in early Sept coordinating volunteer schedule; 1-2 hours/month maintaining schedule)
  • Oversee volunteers to staff the lunchroom. Run a training session for new and returning volunteers in mid-September (4-5 hours in early Sept coordinating schedule; 1-2 hours/month maintaining schedule)
  • Responsible for annual PTC membership drive, collecting dues throughout the school year. Must attend Meet and Greet, PTC Welcome Back Coffee, New-to-East coffee, and Open Houses. (Time commitment heavily weighted Sept. - Nov.)
  • Assist Music teacher with music room needs once a month, including organizing 3rd grade recorder folders at the beginning of the year. Assist with East School Singers, including coordinating beginning-of-year signup sheets and permission slips for December concert. Coordinate Arts Night music display in May. (1-2 hours/month)
  • Attend every-other-monthly meetings of NC CARES, report CARES’ sponsored events and programs to the PTC and coordinate CARES programs at the school. (1-2 hours/month)
  • Work with Principal and school secretary to organize a buddy system for children (grades 1-4) of families new to the East School community. Coordinate get-together of new students and their buddies (and families) at East the week before “Back to School!” Organize a coffee for families new to East School in mid-September. Required to be here the last 2 weeks of summer vacation. (2-3 hours 3rd week of August; 1-2 hours coordinating get-together 4th week of August; 1-2 hours at coffee for new families)
  • Appoint and chair nominating committee along with the PTC President and Principal. Oversee process for nominating and selecting next year’s PTC Board and standing Committee Chairpersons. (Time commitment is heaviest Jan.-March( 4-5 hours/week).)
  • Coordinate volunteers to help with classes as they come in for individual photos. (2-3 hours/early Sept coordinating + all day Photo Day)
  • Draft lists of interested room parents. Oversee and lead orientation of room parent duties. Help First VP communicate with room parents throughout the year to help coordinate volunteers. (1-2 hours/month; 3-4 hours/week for first 2 weeks of September)
  • Coordinate the sale of school supplies in the spring. Required to be here at the end of the summer to sort supplies. (4-5 hours/late August + 5-6 hours/late spring handling orders)
  • Organize the Science Fair in early February with the Science teachers. Coordinate publicity and entry forms. Oversee set-up the day of the event. (4-5 hours/Jan-early Feb)
  • Coordinate and publicize support meetings for the parents of children with special needs. (1-2 hours/month)
  • Assist Math Coordinator and Science and Technology teachers in organizing this event. Coordinate publicity. Oversee set-up the night of the event. (4-5 hours/Jan)
  • Coordinate communication between Strings teacher and parents of strings players. Maintain and communicate to parents via up-to-date group email address list of all players for special reminders or notifications. Assist Strings teacher at December concert with Saxe students (4th gr) and spring district-wide 3rd and 4th grade concert at Saxe. (1-2 hours/month + 4-5 hours at beginning of year to set-up email/text database)
  • Coordinate volunteers through Secretary and room parents to assist teachers with administrative tasks (such as copying) on an as needed basis. (4-5 hours in early Sept coordinating schedule; 1-2 hours/month maintaining schedule)
  • Organize luncheon for teachers and staff in the spring. (4-5 hours/luncheon)
  • Organize luncheon for teachers and staff in December. (4-5 hours/luncheon)
  • Organize volunteers to ride buses to and from school for the first two weeks of school. Work with administration and bus company to resolve any problems that may arise.
  • Oversee rehearsal and production of the East School Variety Show, usually held in May. (4-5 hours/week for 2-3 weeks in late April/early May)
  • Coordinate with representatives from all the NC schools to preview and book shows for assemblies the following year. Attend 1 district meeting/month (1 hour) and 3 shows/year at East. (1-2 hours/month along with 5-6 hours/year previewing shows. Can bring young children to all meetings and shows.)
  • Coordinate all aspects and publication of the school-wide yearbook, including collecting and assembling of candid photos from classroom photographers. (8-10 hours/month for 1-2 months in late winter/early spring)

The 4th Grade invites you to attend PASTA NIGHT at East School. This is the 4th Grade’s biggest fundraiser with all proceeds going to the 4th Grade Field Trip.

Dinner will be served by Fourth Grade Students. The menu includes pasta with or without sauce, meatballs, salad, bread and water. Italian ices and soft drinks will be available for purchase. The students will also be selling home-baked desserts.

Seatings are organized by teacher. Fourth graders will eat before their assigned shift and need a reservation/payment.

  • Advance reservations only – tickets will not be sold at the door.
  • Reservations for 4th grade families open Monday, January 30th – deadline is February 8th to guarantee your spot before seating is opened to all grades.
  • Reservations for K-3rd grade families open Thursday, February 9th (seatings on a first come/first serve basis).
  • Reservations are $10 per person – include 4th grader with your reservation.

 New Canaan, CT – Six years since its inception, New Canaan Public School’s Tech Night is once again bringing together students and technology.  Students from grades 2-12 created more than 50 extracurricular projects outside and inside of the classroom showing exceptional uses of technology. Teachers K-12 will also be showcasing innovative uses of technology in their classrooms.  This night provides students and educators alike an opportunity to showcase and witness how technology enhances and encourages learning.  Attendees also have the opportunity to view a presentation in the High School Planetarium.
Every student formally applies by submitting his or her idea for a project, describing its use of technology and supplying reasons for sharing this idea.  A committee of faculty and staff review each application and provide support to each student—granting them the opportunity to teach and inspire with their ideas and creations.  Some of this year’s submissions include:

  • “Solar Boat”
  • “The Magic of Green Screen”
  • “The Morse Code Transcriber”
  • “Papertronics”
  • And many more presentations!

 

Join us for Tech Night on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 6:30 pm at New Canaan High School with a scheduled snow date of Tuesday, February 28, 2012.
