From the Principal:

End of Year Jitters: As the end of the year approaches we notice that many children develop quite a bit of anxiety about transitioning to a new grade or school. Many are convinced that they will leave all their friends behind as they move up. Others have strong bonds with the current teachers and don’t want to change a good thing.  We see many impulsive, immature behaviors now. We also see children who are more emotional than usual. Our children need us to listen and empathize while we reassure them.

 

In addition, there are many, many (toooooo many) end of year activities both in and out of school. Parties, tournaments, recitals and playoffs are all exciting, but they are extremely stressful for children. Kids build up adrenaline, eat a lot of cake and lose a lot of sleep. Even younger siblings traipsing around after older ones find the situation tough to handle. Children need lots and lots of down time to compensate for all this activity. They need more sleep than you might think, and they need plenty of reassurance, too. Resist some of the celebrations and spend time as a family taking a hike or a picnic. Make sure children get lots of sleep. Limit overnights if you can. Remind all children that these activities are fun, but they don’t have to score every goal and get a Gold Cup for everything. Summer (and flip flops) is coming fast and we can all enjoy some well-earned relaxation.

 

Quick Reminders for Caregivers:

PARK LEGALLY! Fire hydrants, handicapped zones, school bus zones and no parking areas apply at school, too! Use the buses when you can. They are reliable and can save you a lot of time and quite a few headaches.

 

DISMISSAL CHANGES: Please make changes BEFORE 2:00  in Carline unless it is an absolute emergency. Our office is having a very hard time processing all of your requests, and last minute changes are very disconcerting for young children (and their teachers).

 

LOST AND FOUND: It’s overflowing with every manner of sweatshirt, shoes, lunchboxes (minus thermoses and old bottles), mittens (yes, indeedy) and coats. PLEASE come find your lost things!

It’s hard to believe that there is only one more month of school until the kids are out for summer break!
We hope most of you had the opportunity to witness our 3rd and 4th graders perform in the Strings Extravaganza at the New Canaan High School last Thursday evening.  It was so impressive to see how well the 3rd graders from East, South and West performed together after only practicing for 1 ½ hours!!  It was also evident that ALL of the children practiced long and hard on their arrangements and are really beginning to perfect their craft. Bravo to Mr. Levitin for enriching our little ones and to Patty Renda and Mariola Galavis for helping to make the evening a big success.
We also want to thank Heather Watchmaker for spearheading the Kindergarten Intake efforts.  New families and current ones were recently welcomed and given tours of the school while the Kindergarten teachers met with our newest little East additions.

The children have an opportunity to help the JDRF by participating in the Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes. Children may choose to participate in fundraising, with parental permission, by selling paper sneakers to family and friends. Details are included in the JDRF envelopes sent home in the children’s backpacks.   Additionally, please find below the link to support the East School JDRF Walk:

The Kids Walk will be held at East on Friday, June 1st at 2:45 pm. If we’re fortunate to have clear weather, parents and siblings are invited to join the students as they walk. Inclement weather will bring the walk indoors and won’t allow sufficient space for family participation.
Diabetes is a disease that affects millions of Americans and each day more than 40 children are stricken with type 1 diabetes, for which there is no cure. For more information about type 1 diabetes, please contact your local JDRF chapter at 203-854-0658.

Field Day will be broken down into two different sessions.   We are asking volunteers for the grades 2-4 to arrive by  9:45 am and for K-1 volunteers to arrive at 1:00 pm.  We need lots of volunteers!
   • If you are volunteering to assist with 2nd, 3rd or 4th Grade your shift time will be 9:45 a.m.- 12:20 p.m.
   • If you are volunteering to assist with Kindergarten and 1st Grade your shift time will be 1:00 -3:00 p.m.
